Weekly Roundup #009
ft. this fortnight's library haul and Harry Potter
Currently Reading:
Intermezzo by Salley Rooney
I’ve wanted to get into Salley Rooney since Normal People blew up in the online book space and made its way to television. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get into it the way so many people had, and I gave up on Rooney for a while. I picked up Intermezzo the other day at the library and have been really enjoying it so far. If I enjoy it, I’ll give Normal People another try.
The Nature Fix by Florence Williams
This is my current non-fiction read. Williams goes through the research on the benefits of being outdoors. Going into it, I wasn’t sure I would be able to appreciate it because, frankly, it seems obvious to me that being in nature is good for us, and I wasn’t sure why I would need experimental data to prove that to myself. However, I am really enjoying it! It is interesting to learn about the experiments and research in this area, in addition to utilizing common sense about whether or not nature is good for humans.
The House Saphir by Marissa Meyer
This YA fantasy is set in the same world as Meyer’s Gilded duology. As with any of my fantasy reads, this one is just pure fun. And Meyer’s writing is fantastic as always.
Finished This Week:
Death Comes for the Archbishop by Willa Cather
According to my library log, I had this book checked out for four months. It actually only took me about a week to read it, but the pregnancy brain has been very, very real. I adore this novel; it has solidified a spot in my favorites for sure. The meandering through time and geography, following the growth of the Catholic church in the American Southwest, was a beautiful story to follow. Cather’s writing is like a balm to the soul.
On My Television
My husband and I have been rewatching the Harry Potter films. So far, we’ve watched the first four, and we’ll probably watch the fifth one tonight. There’s something so cozy about these movies; they’re great for the rainy days we’ve been having.
In My Earbuds
Two of my current reads (The Nature Fix and The House Saphir) are audiobooks.
I recently listened to this episode of Maiden Mother Matriarch and loved it. I especially loved when Paul Eastwick encouraged men to make friends with women in community before rushing into dating. I wonder if some of the critics of my The Mr. Collins Complex essay would appreciate the advice more if it came from a man…
That’s the weekly roundup for this week. I’m not going to say what I will or won’t be writing about next week because I honestly don’t know. With my current state in life, I might have to back off on rigid weekly schedules and simply post when I’m able. I have been thinking about expensive weddings, materialism, and college regrets/continuing education, so look for essays on those in the future. I hope you all have a great weekend!
